When I registered for my for my first convention I had no idea what to expect. The event was called Konmorex Klingon. The venue was an oldy-worldy hotel called the Hobbit just outside Halifax [Yorkshire].
Getting there was a Klingon challenge in itself. It was snowing on the day I was due to travel and road conditions were atrocious. The con hotel was on top of a steep hill. We tried hard but driving up that hill turned out to be a mission impossible. In the end we had to abandon our bird of prey in a car park at the bottom and had to climb the icy hill carrying all those bags. We found a way to beat this challenge but it took a lot of determination and involved going sideways.
Little did I know that this was only the beginning of a funfilled weekend. Later that day we went out to raid the local Indian Restaurant. This was a perfect opportunity to meet the rest of the Klingon horde.
When we returned to the hotel, we participated in a pub quiz. Our team won and I went up to the panel of judges to collect our prize, a bottle of wine.
Next day I dressed in Klingon attire for the very first time. I didn't have a costume but Teresa AKA Riz had brought one along for me. She also showed me how to attach the wig to my headpiece and advised me on make-up. Slowly but surely I was transforming into a different character. It was fun to watch it all happening.
The local press popped by and took photos. All this was very new to me, people taking photos, asking you about your costume and character. It took me a while to get used to all this.
We visited the Hebden crypt, a miniature version of the London dungeons, in costume. Other visitors found us either amusing or looked at us a wee bit puzzled. Perhaps they thought some of the exhibits had come alive and were worried what would happen next.
The weekend was a hoot and before I knew it, it was time to change into
my Terran persona once again.
