Demon
Fleet
We've been watching
'Enterprise'. Avoided it when it was on--way too annoyed at continuity
avoidance on the part of Berman and crew to ever become willing to
commit the time.
But now they're showing it in clumps, on a night with no real good
TV--and a night when most people just want to lie around--Monday.
And, of course, I watch the Klingons. The nasty, swaggering Klingons.
Shoot first and probe the wreckage for anything useful. Klingons who
are strong. Klingons who look at Earth as a prize to be taken from the
kuve that inhabit it. Klingons who inspire.
And I miss that so much.
We've bested the Feddies so many times that most of them have recorded
pre-surrender messages in case we call. We've swaggered through so many
cons, partying until the place shook. We've stood astride fandom and
called it ours.
But what now?
When you've taken the hill, captured the prize, set out to conquer the
universe and gone so far that you've finally met yourself, when there
seems to be nothing left to conquer, what is a conquering people to do?
We can rest on our laurels--and let me tell you, those laurels are
reeeeeaally comfortable.
We can disappear, leaving behind a slowly fading legacy, a history to
be picked over until it fades into insignificance.
We can wax nostalgic, and drive everyone crazy as we endlessly recount
stories of our glory days(far worse than resting on laurels--at least
when you're on the laurels you tend to keep your mouth shut lest
someone notice the moldiness of said laurels)
Or, we can act like Klingons and fight.
And some of us are doing just that.....but...they're going about it all
wrong.
Everyone keeps looking for the next new thing, the next big idea. The
innovation that'll shower us with glory. And they're so busy looking
for this that nothing really gets done.
There are only so many sexual positions. After a point, it's all
repetition.
But repetition can be a good thing...
What we've forgotten is that practice makes perfect. Instead of looking
in vain for something new, hone the skills we have. Better parties,
better uniforms, better 'zines, newsletters and websites.
KAGs parties in general(and Demon Fleet parties in particular) are the
stuff of legend. Alcoholic strip-Twister, The Order of the Staff of
Kahless, The Laughing Targ Tavern, all the insanity of the Year Games.
Look at the Agonizer, Heart of Glory, Mindscanner, Demonic Press--or
the films of the Rakehell.
How good are our uniforms and makeup? Some members have gone pro.
We do so much so well. Let's stop waiting for some new 'wave' and do
what we do best!
