Star Trek and Klingon’s and most everything from that universe belongs to someone else and we are just playing with it. No copy write rules have been broken or mis-used. No money is made and no gifts received from the use of any of the Star Trek items in the news letter. It is all for fun. So please don’t sue me or take away my Klingon Uniform. It only takes 15 minutes to read this news letter. Unless you are a feddie.

My Honor And Glory Shining Bright, Never In Defeat

And Standing Right Beside Me, The Warriors Of The Fleet

For I know That While I Stand In Honor And Glory

My Honor And Glory does Belongs To My Fleet

I Hold In My Hand, The Head Of My Enemy

Executive Officer’s Lament

My duty ongoing, it is the Empire I serve, my Ship, my Captain.

And to insure that my crew also serves us as well.

Though the dull duty of exploration, or the thrill of battle.

I will share in the honor and success of Empire, Ship, Captain.

And watching my Captain’s back as well as my own.

For my commander is strong, successful, honorable.

Should he ever falter slightly, I will support him.

But should his error be great,

I shall have made it a point to be elsewhere on shore leave,

to return and begin my own Captaincy.

And his prior misjudgments will not be repeated,

While in the Captain’s chair I’d sit.

To carry on his legacy of strength, success, honor.

And to deny my Executive Officer;s request for shore leave.

Voice Of Command: Quadrant Commander

It is January 2017. And as I set here at my desk, in my little office, I am remembering many years ago when I was doing pretty much the samething I am doing now. I am writing my first post for the first news letter for a new quadrant.

At that time I was new at my job which was Quadrant Commander,. I had only been a member of the Klingon Assault Group for a little over a year. And KAG was it self only a couple year old. As for the quadrant, it was even younger than I was as a Klingon unit. And now I find myself right back where I was these many years later being new at my job after only just returning to KAG a little over a year ago, and also having only been Quadrant Commander again for less time than that.

With age comes wisdom. And this time around the job has been much easier than it was that first time. Not only am I older and wiser but I also have a better idea of what I am doing and what needs to be done to get the mission completed. And I also have the years of experience that the Mind Scanner has to offer right next door here on kag.org. And there are also many warriors out there that will come to my aide should I need their guidance.

So like I said I was setting here thinking about what I wanted to say and I was also thinking about the warriors under my command that are both new to KAG and also those warriors who have been members of KAG a long time but who are now just returning and I was wondering what I could do to guide them and inspire them to be the best KAG Warrior they can be.

Well here it is. The first News Letter for a newly reformed – reformatted Quadrant. And this is what I can do. I can give the warriors a place to come to when they need an answer and make sure that the data they need to succeed is always close at hand. Using this news letter and the Phoenix Rising Archives as a whole I can see all kind of idea’s and ways to keep not only the new recruits that join KAG up to date, but also help the older Warriors that have been here a while to be more informed on our mission.

I can use this news letter not only as a way to keep the warriors up to date on what we as a group are doing, but also a way to keep a record of what we have done. I can also use this news letter as a way to issue guide lines and commands and have those guide lines and commands in a place that will always be here to refer the warriors back to when needed.

For instance in this issue there will be two reports that I can refer people to and they will be able to find the reports easy and I don’t have to keep writing them up and posting them like I do on Face Book. The reports will be here and I will just have to tell new recruits where to find them and let that be that.

The news letter will cut down on the time I have to waste repeating myself. And that is a beautiful thing..

This first issue may be a little longer than we wanted it to be. But I wanted to cover the most important bases in this first issue so that we have a permanent record that would be easy found.

For the Ship Commanders I want to point out the Ship reports and the ‘ How Do I Make A Ship Report’ Section. The ship report will tell you what other ships in the quadrant are doing And the section that tells how to make a ship report will teach the proper way to report to ensure that the ships are always in good standing. And with the posting of this news letter there is no reason that any Ship Commander should be able to say I did not know

I also want to point the warriors to the section ‘General Orders”.  This is a list of rules that the warriors of this quadrant are expected to follow. They are few and simple but they are rules that we will follow.

That is pretty much all there is for this month that is not covered elsewhere in the news letter. I encourage all warriors to contact me and let us get to know each other. We can talk about your future in KAG and where you want to go. And I will even give you instruction on how to earn rank and we can map out a course of action and plot a path to success. This is not a guarantee of a promotion. But it is a path to promotion. And it is all in your hands. Rank comes to those who earn it. And I want you all to reach the highest level you can. But it is in your hands to do so.

And with all that said I only wanted to say one more thing. I am so looking forward to working with each and every warrior in the quadrant on a one to one basis. I place myself at your service Just contact me and let me know what I can do for you.

I’d like to welcome you, the readers of this inaugural issue of the Phoenix Rising Newsletter.  I hope you find ideas, encouragement and positive advice in these pages.  After all,  we are writing this newsletter for you, to help you improve your experience as a Klingon in America and a member of KAG.

But now I have to ask you for a favor.  It is hard to keep a monthly newsletter interesting from issue to issue.  It is impossible for Captain Kona-Nor and myself to pull articles together every month that are of interest to you.  What do you want us to talk about, find experts to share advice about, where do you interests lie?  Send us your ideas, making sure we hear you.  We would not be upset if you sent your own articles to us.

Please share this newsletter with anyone you think would be interested.

Let’s talk about the newsletter.  Email me with your thoughts and ideas at [email protected]

KAG Rules

KAG has rules. But they are very few rules. The following is a list of the rules we follow in this quadrant. These are the General Orders. And they are listed here in order to be easily found.

Remember these rules and remember where they are so you can look back on them as needed.

KAG has flourished for nearly three decades now. Its success is largely due to the simplicity of its rules and how they universally apply to all members. There is a good reason for each rule.

           The Rules of KAG are:

1. Have Fun!

The purpose of KAG is fun. We are not a paramilitary organization, but a club for the mutual enjoyment of the things our members have in common – an enthusiasm and appreciation for Klingons and Star Trek in general. The interest of Star Trek fans is varied and diverse; costuming, language, music, weapons, charities, craft-making, role-playing, cuisine, and simple camaraderie are some of the many areas of interest that members may share. While a lot of hard work sometimes goes into the production of the spectacular showmanship KAG is known for, the overall purpose of the club is fun. Simply stated, if you’re not having a good time, you’re not doing it right. KAG is primarily a social group.

2. No Live Steel.

Obey local weapons restrictions. With regard to weapons (real or replica, blade or firearm, sharp or blunt), obey the laws of the land, and the rules of the convention or other event. Unsafe or irresponsible behavior with weapons is a violation of KAG rules. KAG’s weapon policy contains more details on this rule.

3. Do Not Embarrass KAG.

Members should not behave in a manner that dishonors or misrepresents our club. Don’t speak on behalf of (or misrepresent) more than your authority. Don’t commit crimes while in uniform. (Hey! Just don’t commit crimes, period.) Violating the law in the name of, or under color of, KAG is an embarrassment to KAG and can result in your membership being terminated.

Perhaps the most important aspect of the KAG rule, “Do not Embarass KAG” is how you deal with other people. Either individually or as a group, either in KAG or out, bigotry is unacceptable. We are of course fallible and capable of mistakes of judgment. But a unapologetic pattern of Racism, Sexism, or Bigotry of any kind, either online or in real life is Embarrassing to KAG, at the least, and may be grounds for expulsion. While people are free to believe what they wish, members need to always remember that they should always treat other members as equals and should not allow personal prejudices to influence their attitudes towards others (in the club or non-members). KAG’s Code of Conduct has more details on expected conduct within the club.

4. Make no Treaties or Alliances.

No member of KAG is empowered to sign or verbally commit to any treaty, alliance, or contract that could be taken as binding, legal or otherwise, on the whole club. Signing one’s ship up to participate or assist at an event, for example, is not prohibited by this rule.

5. The Thought Admiral Makes the Rules.

This is not a club for rule makers and bureaucratic architects. This rule protects the club from unnecessary bureaucracy and keeps the premise of membership very simple.

The Klingon Assault Group is a large and diverse club. The various Fleets and Divisions have some differences in the way they operate according to what works best for them. The rules of KAG serve to bind the club together as a whole. For this reason, they are few and simple, and not to be added to lightly.

Phoenix Rising General Orders

For warriors of KAG, the KAG rules are written in stone. They were born with KAG and have not been added to or changed since birth. There are five rules, and the very last rule marks the standard for which we march. These rules will be follower by every warrior in the Phoenix Rising.

How ever we also have a set of General Orders that we in this quadrant follow. These are not KAG rules but are orders from the Quadrant Commander that must be followed.

The First General Order of Phoenix Rising is to learn and obey the five rules of KAG. Nuff Said.

The Second General Order of Phoenix Rising is that All ships must report in every months between the 1st and the 10th in order to remain current and active and carried on the official quadrant roll call as a ship and crew. Again, Nuff Said. But yet……

It is an honor to be listed as a KAG ship and a personal honor for a warrior to be able to call them self a KAG Ship Commander. And as quick as it is given, it can be taken away. No one in command rides for free while there is another waiting for glory and honor.

The Third General Order of Phoenix Rising is Respect your fellow Warrior and pass no rumors and say no words of ill thought against another KAG member you are not willing to stand in front of command and replete. Sometime we have to speak up, but there is never a reason to speak in the shadows when we speak with honor. (No rumors, no backstabbing and no politics will be allowed except in game play. And that is finial.)

KAG Phoenix Rising Trefoil Award For 2016

The Phoenix Rising Klingon Trefoil is the highest award that a warrior can earn given by the Phoenix Rising. The award comes in three parts.

KAG Phoenix Rising Warrior Of The Year

KAG Phoenix Rising Victory Warrior Of The Year

KAG Phoenix Rising Honor Warrior Of The Year

The Klingon Trefoil has three points to it. Each point is pointing to a different Warrior. The top point is pointing to the KAG Phoenix Rising Warrior of the year. This is the one warrior in the quadrant that has proven them self to be a true Klingon and a loyal KAG Klingon Warrior.

Lieutenant N’ayr vestai-K’cep  aka Ryan Peck is the Commanding Officer of the IKV Predator and also the KAG Phoenix Rising Warrior of the Year for 2016. Ryan has earned this award because of his actions and Klingon Attitude. All alone in the Tennessee sector, Ryan has worked hard to built a ship from scratch up and has kept a positive attitude in recruiting and ship reporting.

Not only has Ryan built a ship from the ground up, but has been in communications with quadrant command with every step of his mission. Offering support and many great bribe’s.

Ryan also won the KAG Dragon Con 2016 Medal of Glory with Red Bat’leth for commanding his ship on their mission to Dragon Con this year in support of KAG and the Quadrant. And Ryan was also awarded the Quadrant Warriors Badge of Honor at Dragon Con in 2016 and was the Warrior of the month for June 2016.

It should also be noted that Lieutenant N’yar and Lieutenant Kavura aka Kathy Wynn announced to the fleet in January of their engagement. Kathy is the Executive Officer of the IKV Predator.

Ryan has had a very Honorable first year with KAG. qapla’ Lieutenant N’ayr vestai-K’cep

The Klingon Tre Foil lower left point is pointing to the KAG Phoenix Rising Victory Warrior Of The Year. This year, 2016, the award goes to Lieutenant Commander Keh’LaHn vestai-Kla’Horrak aka Shawn Holbrook the Commander of the IKV Kothulhu who also had to fight great odds in order to make his ship part of the great KAG Phoenix Rising Fleet.

Shawn has earned Victory for all the work he has done to make KAG a force of might in an area dominated by other fleets. Out numbered and many times out gunned Lieutenant Commander Keh’LaHn has stood toe to toe with his enemies and friends alike and kept the IKV Kothulhu on a true course for the Klingon Assault Group and the Phoenix Rising.

Lieutenant Commander Keh’LaHn vestai-Kla’Horrak is also awarded the Quadrant Warriors Badge of Honor for his service to the quadrant this year. qapla’ Lieutenant Commander Keh’LaHn vestai-Kla’Horrak

The Klingon Tre Foil lower right point is pointing to the KAG Phoenix Rising Honor Warrior Of The Year. This year, 2016, the award is being awarded to two Warrior, a husband and wife team, that have shared in the Honor in the performance of their duty.

Lieutenant Goth tai-Gore aka Lonnie Bearden and Lieutenant Azetbur vestai-T’Lak aka Donna Jean Bearden, the Commander and Executive Officer of the IKV Battle Fury are the Honor Warriors for the year for 2016 because of the greatest battle of the year, Dragon Con. Without their devotion to duty and their devotion to KAG there would not have been a KAG table at Dragon Con.

There were rumor’s over the last few years that there were no Klingons of KAG at the Dragon Con from this quadrasnt. That cannot be said for 2016 because these two warriors not only set up a KAG table but manned the table for three days defending the honor of our great KAG..

No one can say we did not have a showing at Dragon Con this year. And no one can claim Honor for Dragon Con more than Lonnie and Donna Jean. They are my heroes this year.

Both of these warriors were also awarded the Phoenix Rising Warriors Badge and Donna Jean was awarded KAG highest award.

In the words of our Thought Admiral ……

ATTENTION: I have to say I am thrilled by the reports I am getting back from DragonCon! I want to announce today that for her extreme dedication to making KAG a workable force at DragonCon I am awarding Donna Jean Bearden the KAG Award of Merit, the highest KAG award there is.

Ship / Warrior Of The Month

(2016 Ship Of The Year)

The KAG Phoenix Rising Ship Of The Month For January 2017 is also the KAG Phoenix Rising Ship Of The Year For 2016.

The IKV Dark Star is the oldest and largest ship in the KAG Phoenix Rising.  The Dark Star is not only the longest active ship in the quadrant after coming out of dry dock, but also the oldest active ship in the quadrant.

Commissioned in May 1992 the ship under went several refits and was relaunched in 1998 as the IKAV Fencer and become a Marine Ship of the Empire under the command of Lieutenant Commander Kya Ral vestai-Septaric aka Neil Fuller.

On January 10th 2016 the ship was reclaimed by Commander Kona’Nor sutai-D’ung’yI’Sun’SIn and after refit and renaming to IKV Dark Star the ship was relaunched on March 1st 2016 with several of the original crew.

On April 1st 2016, the accepted official date that Commander Kona’Nor sutai-D’ung’yI’Sun’SIn become the Quadrant Commander of the Dark Phoenix Quadrant for the second time, the IKV Dark Star also become the Official Flag Ship of the Quadrant for the second time.

The IKV Dark Star was one of the first three ships of KAG in the quadrant and has now served KAG for 25 years. It has served as both a Navel ship and a Marine ship. And it has carried the Fleets Flag two times. And during the year 2016 the ship has been the heart of the fleet in the quadrant. For this reason and also in order to honor the crew of the Dark Star for their performance in the rebuilding of KAG in the Deep South, the IKV Dark Star is the Ship Of The Year for 2016 and the Ship Of The Month for January 2016.

Announcements

Kathy and Ryan – IKV Predator

It is my honor to announce to the fleet the engagement of Ryan and Kathy better know to the KAG universe as Lieutenant N’ayr tai-K’cep, Commanding Officer of the IKV Predator and his Executive Officer, Second Lieutenant Kavura tai-Wynn.
After being named as the Phoenix Rising Warrior of the Year for 2016, Ryan then went out and topped his victories by capturing the heart of his XO Kathy. Or did she capture his? Either way, we now have two hearts beating together and working their way to become one heart.

The date of the wedding has been set to be at Treklanta 2017. Ryan and Kathy are asking that all warrior in the area please try to appear and be in uniform. Ryan and Kathy are going to be doing a Original Series Star Trek Wedding and are asking that as many fans as possible show up in uniform, Imperial and TOS,  both Human and Klingon and any other race they wish.

Please let me know if you can attend so we might be able to plan a secret surprise party or something for the Klingon Couple.

How Do I Make A Ship Report

Over the last few months of 2016 we tried many different ways to make ship reporting uniformed in the quadrant so that each Commander would know when and where to submit a report. Ship reports have always been a problem not only in this quadrant but in all of KAG. And monthly reports were always a hit and miss with the reports maybe or maybe not being submitted.

But now, what we have done in this quadrant is require that all ships submit a report by the tenth of each month. And the reports are to be submitted to the same place in a uniformed manor. And we have tied the future of the ship and any future promotions for the command officers of the ship to the reports being on time and filled out proper and in the right place.

In other words, not filling out the ship reports can delay a promotion by months or even longer and also cause a ship to be Dry Docked or even Decommissioned.

We live in an adult world. And even if we do play at being Klingon, we also have a responsibility to our club to and other members to keep our word. And every Commanding Officer in this quadrant has given their word to make monthly reports on time an in full.

Each month I will be reporting the status of each ship in the quadrant here so that no one will be able to say they did not know.

How do I make my reports?
First: All ships must report in between the 1st and 10th of each month. And they will report on the previous month. So a Ship that is making a report in January 2017 is reporting the actions of the ship from December 2016.
Second: The Commander of a ship or one of his Officers must make the report. No one who is not a member of a ship and listed on kag.org can make a report for any ship.

Third: There is only one acceptable way to report. And at this time that way is by following the next step only. No Phone calls, No U.S. Mail or email or post to any other site is accepted as the report. There is no reason that Command should have to hunt a report. If the reports are posted following the next step then they will all appear and stay together and never be lost. And no one can say I posted one or it was eaten by the dog.

How does it work?

Step 1: On the first day of the month, the quadrant commander will post a new post on the Phoenix Rising Face Book Group Page. That post will be pin to the top of the page all month until the last ship has reported in for that month.

Then each ship commander will make a comment under that post with their ship report. This way each ship report will stay with the QC’s original post and they will forever be married together.  This way all ship reports can be found by the Thought Admiral, The Fleet Admiral, and The Quadrant Commander each month and any other time they need to look back.

Step 2: Ship Commander make their commented ship report by Coping the report form below or which can also be found in the QC’s original post for that month on the group page, then filling out the report form in full leaving no parts unanswered, and then pasting the report form in a comment on the QC’s original post.

DO NOT START A NEW POST. IF YOU START A NEW POST THEN THE REPORT WILL BE LOST. IF YOU POST YOUR REPORT IN A COMMENT TO THE QUADRANT COMMANDERS ORIGINAL POST THEN ALL SHIP REPORT WILL REMAIN TOGETHER. IT IS VERY IMPORTANT TO REMEMBER THIS BECAUSE IF THE REPORT IS NOT IN THE RIGHT PLACE THEN IT WILL NOT BE COUNTED AS A SHIP REPORTING IN FOR THE MONTH.
Please do not post pictures or comments or anything else. Just post the monthly report here. The quadrant staff will not comment to any report other than to give you a like showing that we have read the report and that your ship is in good standing.

Copy, Fill Out, and Paste the following and then comment to the QC’s original post. (Do not copy the Start Here and End Here)

Do not copy the START HERE and END HERE. Copy between the lines and get just the ship Phoenix Rising Ship Report down to the end of Comments. It is that easy. And this is all you need to do to make sure your ship is in good standing for the month.
Also If by some chance you would like to make a phone call some time during the month to myself or the Executive Officer then that would not hurt you also and in fact be a plus come time for promotions.
I really cannot stress just how important it is that we get this right each month.
I know that from time to time, things happen that will slow us down and make things a little hard. But I also know that if you really care then you will walk that extra mile to do what has to be done. I will not except any reasons for not receiving a report on time. I understand that you may have problems. But you need to understand that other people are depending on you doing what you agreed to do in order to carry the title KAG Commander.

Making Prop Weapons part 1

You have docked your shuttle, infiltrated the convention hotel, completed the registration process, your uniform is perfected but are you prepared for battle? Is your bek’leth sharpened, is your Dk’tagh displayed with honor?

How do you go about constructing a Klingon personal combat weapon? Decide what you are willing to carry for an entire day. A Dk’tagh can be sheathed but unless you have a sling, you’re going to have to hand carry a bek’leth continuously. If you want a different kind of weapon, there are several to chose from.
Don’t get me wrong, I am not talking about steel weapons but rather wooden props that will augment your image as a Klingon.
I work with plywood, 1/2 inch plywood. Thicker than a 1/2 inch makes the prop heavy and thinner will allow the bigger props to wobble. Detracting from their image. Typically I go to Love’s and buy a 4 by 8 foot sheet of plywood and have them cut it in half, into 2, 4 by 4 sheets. They fit in my vehicle better that way. You can buy smaller sheets of plywood depending on where you shop but I have found that the full 4 by 8 sheets are the most economical. You should be able to get at least 7 bek’leths out of one 4 by 8 sheet or dozens of Klingon daggers.

I usually use one sheet to do a combination of weapons to minimize waste.
Where can you find patterns? Find a clean image of the prop you want to create. Download the image into a software package that will allow you to blow up the image, usually the bigger original image the better the blown up copy. I use Photoshop to expand the image to the actual size of the prop I am trying to create; a bek’leth should be 48 inches tip to tip. Then I print out the image in sections and paste those sections together. Finally I cut out the prop image and I have my pattern. I will only need to use this paper one once. After I have cut the first one out, I can use it as a pattern going into the future.

Trace the pattern onto your plywood, shift things around to maximize your wood usage. If it is possible to cut the sheet into smaller pieces, I’ll use a circular saw to make the plywood more manageable. Clamp the plywood you are able to remove the prop from tight before using a jigsaw or scroll saw. The more it is able to vibrate while you are cutting the harder it will be to cut.
If you have any holes in the design that you need to cut out, you can use a plunge router if you have one or drill holes in the section that needs to be cut out large enough to get your jigsaw blade to maneuver in and cut them out. Perfection in this raw cutting process is not essential. You will clean things up in the sanding process. I do most of my sanding with a belt sander: wear gloves, safety glasses and be aware of the moving belt because you will be getting close to is.
Once I have smoothed things out, I put the edge on the blades. Using the belt sander and angling the wood will quickly bevel the edges so they look like they have been sharpened. Don’t get your edges too sharp as they will break off easily, they just need to LOOK like they are sharp.
You will need to finish the sanding process with progressive finer sand paper.

The smoother you get the final product the better it will take the paint and look like steel. Clean off all the sawdust when you are finished either with a tack cloth or a damp rag (but make sure it is dry before you paint).
I have been using a Hammered Silver spray paint to paint each of them. Once dry, they would be traditionally get a strip of leather wrapped around each of the hand holds. Either staple or glue the ends so they don’t unravel. There is a technique for simply tying off the leather grips in place, but I have not mastered it. Another technique I have started playing with is using Plasti-Dip on the handles. I can physically dip the dagger handles and have tried using the spray on version for bek’leths. I’m not happy with the results, I have more work to do to refine the technique.

Next time I will talk about the incredible list of Klingon style hand weapons available to build.
