Volunteer Planting Day After Event Report

After Event Report

IKV Dragons Eye

LT. Kamish vestai-Dungyl’SunSin: Commanding Officer

On Saturday March 4th 2017 the crew of the IKV Dragons Eye, along with about sixty other people, came together to helped plant 300 chestnut seeds at the Sandy Creek Nature Center. The planting of the seeds is part of an ongoing managed forest project that the nature center has been working on now for over a year. This has also been a project that I have been involved with since its beginning. The project began with the removal of invasive plant species. Then the next phase of the plan was a controlled burn of the area. This last phase started with the removal of diseased and dying trees, than the planting of pine and chestnut seedlings, which is what the Dragons Eye took part in. This project is to return the forest back to what it looked like with native plants, and to leave a legacy forest for future generations.

The crew of the Dragons Eye rendezvoused at the Sandy Creek Nature Center at 9:30 Saturday morning, and we were the first to arrive for the day’s festivities. The crew that were able to come was Lance Corporal Kitara, aka Caitlin King, my XO Sergeant Makayla, aka Andrea King, and Lance Corporal Ashley Cotton along with her husband Chris Cotton. Lance Corporal Lonta’ was away on official business for the ship. We collected our supplies that we would need for the day, as well as a bag of seeds, and started planting at 10:15. After instructing the crew as to how the seeds were to be planted I assigned them each different tasks of the planting process. The work went very well, and we operated like a well-oiled machine. It went so well that we were the first ones to plant all fifty of our seeds. Qapla’!! After we cleaned up a bit we hung around and spoke with a few people about our ship and KAG and took pictures. After learning about our ship and KAG we were asked to come take part in other events that are planned for the public throughout the year. We were told that the nature center had been in contact with another local science fiction fan group, but was told that the events at the nature center were just not big enough for them to come out for. I assured the event coordinated that we would be glad to come out and take part in any event that they might want us for. We ended the day in true warrior fashion with weapons practice at a friend’s house. A glorious day was had by all.
